This recipe is all you need to make a simple sponge cake quickly and with little preparation or fuss. Simply add the ingredients into the mixer bowl and select the ‘Sponge cake’ pre-set programme, letting the machine do the hard work. Once the machine stops divide the mixture between two sandwich tins and bake.

Step preview

  1. Pre-heat oven - 180°C
  2. Grease 2 clean round pans
  3. Line with parchment paper then set aside
  4. Attach K Beater
  5. Add unsalted butter, all purpose flour, caster sugar, baking powder, egg, milk and vanilla extract to the Kenwood Bowl
  6. Mix - 1 min, Speed Max
  7. Divide content of Kenwood Bowl between 2 round pans evenly
  8. Spread until level
  9. Bake until golden brown - 20 min, 180°C
  10. Let cool - approx 5 min
  11. Turn out onto cooling rack and let cool
  12. Transfer one sponge to serving plate
  13. Spread with strawberry jam and buttercream frosting
  14. Place the other sponge on top and press down gently
  15. Dust with icing sugar
  16. Serve
