A simple 50/50 blend of plain and wholemeal flour. This classic bread is perfect for sandwiches, toasting and best served with a generous spread of salted butter.

Step preview

  1. Attach Spiral Dough Tool
  2. Add water, active dried yeast, all purpose flour, unsalted butter, milk, caster sugar, wholemeal bread flour and salt to the Kenwood Bowl
  3. Mix with splashguard fitted - 10 min, Speed 1
  4. Check the dough, it must be flexible and homogenous
  5. Cover with kitchen towel
  6. Prove until doubled - 1 hr
  7. Carefully transfer the dough from the Mixer bowl to a lightly floured work surface
  8. Gently pull the edges into the centre
  9. Roll the dough over and make into a loaf shape
  10. Place the dough into a loaf tin, making sure the line/seal is placed on the top
  11. Cover the dough with a damp tea towel and place in a warm, draught free place
  12. Prove until doubled - 1 hr
  13. Pre-heat oven - 220°C
  14. Remove the tea towel and spray the dough with salted water
  15. Bake - 25 min, 220°C
  16. Remove the loaf from the oven
  17. To check if the loaf is cooked, gently tap the bottom of the loaf. If the bread sounds hollow its cooked, then place onto a cooling rack. If not, place it back into the oven for a few more minutes
  18. Let cool
  19. Serve
