Once made, you can then whisk in your flavourings such as vanilla, cocoa, fruit jams, nougat, etc. Pay attention to the texture. If the buttercream is too runny, you can always add a touch more butter. Use cling film to cover the buttercream and pop it in the fridge for a couple of minutes - this will help it to firm up a bit so it's easier to use.
