A simple 50/50 blend of plain and wholemeal flour. This classic bread is perfect for sandwiches, toasting and best served with a generous spread of salted butter.

Step preview

  1. Attach the Dough Tool
  2. Add water, plain flour, unsalted butter, milk, caster sugar, wholemeal bread flour, salt and quick-rise yeast to the Cooking Chef XL Bowl
  3. Lift the Cooking Chef head and fit the heat shield
  4. Mix with splashguard fitted - 1 min, Speed Min
  5. Mix with splashguard fitted - 9 min, Speed 1
  6. Remove the Dough Tool
  7. Prove with splashguard fitted until doubled in size - 1 hr, 30°C, Speed OFF
  8. Carefully transfer the dough from the appliance bowl to a lightly floured worksurface
  9. Gently pull the edges into the centre
  10. Roll the dough over and make into a loaf shape
  11. Place the dough into a loaf tin, making sure the line/seal is placed on the top
  12. Cover the dough with a damp tea towel and place in a warm, draught free place
  13. Prove until doubled - 1 hr
  14. Pre-heat oven - 220°C
  15. Remove the tea towel and spray the dough with salted water
  16. Bake - 25 min, 220°C
  17. Remove from oven and let cool
  18. Serve
