These savoury babka buns are filled with a blend of sun-dried tomatoes, olives, basil, pine nuts and cheese which means they taste and smell like a delicious pizza roll. These are really fun to make and delicious served warm from the oven.

Step preview

  1. Grease and line a clean baking tray with parchment paper
  2. Attach the Dough Tool
  3. Add milk to the Cooking Chef XL Bowl
  4. Lift the Cooking Chef head and fit the heat shield
  5. Heat with splashguard fitted until hot - 2 min, 30°C, Stir 1
  6. Then add active dried yeast and sugar to the Cooking Chef XL Bowl
  7. Heat with splashguard fitted until combined - 30 sec, 35°C, Stir 1
  8. Heat with splashguard fitted until dissolved - 5 min, 35°C, Speed OFF
  9. Then add all purpose flour, egg, egg yolk and salt to the Cooking Chef XL Bowl
  10. Mix with splashguard fitted until combined - 1 min, Speed Min
  11. Mix with splashguard fitted until well combined - 2 min, Speed 1
  12. Add butter to the Cooking Chef XL Bowl gradually while machine is running
  13. Mix with splashguard fitted until smooth - 6 min, Speed 1
  14. Remove the Dough Tool
  15. Prove with splashguard fitted - 1 hr, 30°C, Speed OFF
  16. Assemble the Food Processor attachment to the machine
  17. Fit the knife blade to the Food Processor bowl
  18. Add sundried tomato, black olives, pine nuts, tomato purée, fresh basil leaves, garlic clove, oil, salt and black pepper to the Food processor attachment
  19. Attach the lid and ensure it is locked into place
  20. Pulse until blended
  21. Transfer mixture to small bowl then set aside
  22. Transfer dough to lightly floured surface
  23. Flatten
  24. Divide into pieces
  25. Shape into a ball
  26. Roll into a rectangle
  27. Add filling to shaped dough
  28. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese
  29. Roll shaped dough into a log
  30. Pinch all the seams and ends to seal
  31. Slice lengthwise
  32. Twist together
  33. Stretch the braid into 25cm (10”) length
  34. Bring both ends together, overlapping them and creating a hole in the middle
  35. Bring one end into the hole and pinch it together with the other end at the bottom
  36. Transfer shaped dough to baking tray
  37. Cover with plastic wrap
  38. Prove until doubled - 1 hr
  39. Pre-heat oven - 190°C
  40. Add egg and water to a clean small bowl
  41. Beat lightly
  42. Brush shaped dough with egg mixture
  43. Bake until golden brown - 20 min, 190°C
  44. Serve
