This recipe is all you need to make a simple sponge cake quickly and with little preparation or fuss. Simply add the ingredients into the mixer bowl and select the ‘Sponge cake’ pre-set programme, letting the machine do the hard work. Once the machine stops divide the mixture between two sandwich tins and bake.

Step preview

  1. Pre-heat oven - 180°C
  2. Grease 2 clean round pans
  3. Line with parchment paper then set aside
  4. Attach the K-Beater
  5. Add unsalted butter, all purpose flour, caster sugar, baking powder, egg, milk and vanilla extract to the Cooking Chef XL Bowl
  6. Lift the Cooking Chef head and fit the heat shield
  7. Mix with splashguard fitted - 1 min, Speed Max
  8. Divide content of Cooking Chef XL Bowl between 2 round pans evenly
  9. Spread until level
  10. Bake until golden brown - 20 min, 180°C
  11. Remove from oven and let cool - approx 5 min
  12. Turn out onto cooling rack and let cool
  13. Transfer one sponge to serving plate
  14. Spread with strawberry jam and buttercream frosting
  15. Place the other sponge on top and press down gently
  16. Dust with icing sugar
  17. Serve
